5 Signs Your Business Website Is Costing You Customers

🚨

Most business websites don't fail loudly. They fail quietly — a visitor waits three seconds, gives up, and calls your competitor instead. You never see it happen. As a web design company in Sri Lanka, we audit sites like this every week; these are the five leaks we find most often.

1. It's slow on mobile data

Your customer isn't on office Wi-Fi — they're on a phone, on mobile data, in traffic. If your site takes more than about three seconds to become usable, a large share of visitors leave before seeing anything. Oversized images and bloated themes are the usual culprits, and they're fixable without a full rebuild.

2. There's no one-tap way to contact you

A contact form nobody fills in is not a contact strategy. Sri Lankan customers live on WhatsApp — if reaching you takes more than one tap, you're losing the impatient majority. Every page should carry a direct line: tap, chat, done.

Your website is either your hardest-working salesperson or your most expensive business card.

3. It looks like it was built years ago

Visitors judge credibility in about a tenth of a second, and they judge it on design. Dated layouts quietly tell customers your business is behind — even when your actual work is excellent. When we rebuilt sites like Travel Treasures and SR Impex, the goal wasn't decoration; it was making the first impression match the quality of the company.

4. You're invisible on Google — and now on AI search

If your pages lack proper titles, descriptions and structured data, you don't just rank poorly — you're also invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, which is where a growing share of "web design in Sri Lanka"-style searches now get answered. Modern SEO covers both, and it has to be built into the site, not sprinkled on later.

5. Nobody can tell what you want them to do

Ten menu items, three sliders, no offer. If a stranger can't answer "what does this company do and what's my next step?" within five seconds, the design has failed — beautifully, perhaps, but failed. One clear offer per page, one obvious next step.

How many did you tick?

One or two of these is normal; three or more means your website is actively working against you. Start with our guide to web design costs in Sri Lanka to understand what fixing it involves, and vet whoever you hire — including us.

Frequently asked questions

Common warning signs are slow loading on mobile data, no one-tap way to contact you such as WhatsApp, a dated design that undermines trust, missing titles, descriptions and structured data so you are invisible on Google and AI search, and no clear offer or next step on the page. Three or more of these means the site is actively working against you.

A website should become usable within about three seconds on mobile data. Beyond that a large share of visitors leave before seeing anything. Oversized images and bloated themes are the usual causes and can often be fixed without a full rebuild.

Usually because pages lack proper titles, meta descriptions and structured data, load slowly, or have no sitemap submitted. AI answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity mostly read raw HTML, so content loaded only by JavaScript is invisible to them. These foundations need to be built into the site rather than added later.
